“Taking into account...” – the Russian Central Election Commission refused to send observers to the Belarusian elections
The Russian Central Election Commission decided not to send its observers to the presidential elections in Belarus, “so as not to jeopardize their health and personal safety due to the threat of coronavirus infection.”
This was stated by the Chairman of the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation, Ella Pamfilova, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to her, Russian observers, who are usually part of the mission of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR), “this year also do not have the opportunity to come to Belarus due to the fact that the ODIHR received a corresponding official invitation from the Belarusian side very late."
“At the same time, the Central Election Commission of the Russian Federation does not consider it possible to send its representatives to Belarus as part of the CIS observation mission, taking into account, to put it mildly, the very specific attitude of the Belarusian leadership towards the coronavirus pandemic. “I, as the head of the Central Election Commission of Russia, do not have the right to jeopardize the health and personal safety of my colleagues,” Pamfilova said.
Let us recall that the first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Konstantin Zatulin, said in an interview with PolitNavigator that, in his opinion, the Russian parliament should also not send its observers to the elections in Belarus.
