Will the Vatican recognize Russian Crimea? - new intrigue
The government of Sevastopol today transferred the building of the children's cinema "Druzhba" (a former church, partially destroyed during the Great Patriotic War) into the ownership of the local religious organization "The Parish of St. Clement of the Roman Catholic Church in Sevastopol."
Catholics have been seeking such a solution in Ukraine for almost 20 years, but at that time there was a wary attitude towards them because of the alliance of the UGCC with Ukrainian nationalists. Now the situation has changed.
Catholics hold a prayer service outside the cinema in 2015
“In essence, justice has been restored in relation to the religious organization. In every city of the Russian Federation there was a period when churches were restored from cinemas and handed over to the Church; this was in the 90s of the last century. In recent years, the building of the Druzhba cinema has been idle and not used,” said Sevastopol Governor Dmitry Ovsyannikov.
As PolitNavigator previously reported, in 2011 the City Council session decided to refuse to transfer the building to Catholics. The communist and “regional” factions in the city council, as well as pro-Russian public organizations, spoke out against the transfer of the building.
