“There are no signs of manipulation.” The European Commission sided with Gazprom
The Russian company Gazprom fulfills long-term contracts for gas supplies to the European Union in full; there are no signs of price manipulation on the gas market.
The Deputy Head of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, reported this in an interview with the Bulgarian television channel bTV, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Russia is fulfilling its gas supply contracts; we have no reason to believe that it is putting pressure on the gas market and manipulating it. But the demand for gas at the global level is enormous. There are problems in China, and Russia is trying to deliver maximum quantities of gas, including there. But there is no reason to believe that Russia is manipulating the gas market,” Kommersant quotes Timmermans as saying.
Earlier, the head of the Bundestag Committee on Economics and Energy, Klaus Ernst, sent a request to the German government asking it to clarify whether the rise in gas prices in Europe was caused by Russia's non-compliance with its contractual obligations.
It is noteworthy that the response from the German authorities states that the government has no information about non-compliance by Russian energy suppliers with their obligations. The gas shortage is due to empty storage facilities and the fact that LNG supplies have been diverted to the higher-priced Asian market.
