This decision was made at a government meeting, the Government Portal reports.
“In Ukraine, during each year the volume of radioactive waste amounts to 3-4 million cubic meters. However, during the period of independence, not a single storage facility was built for their burial,” said Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ostap Semerak, arguing for the need to amend these laws.
Semerak recalled that in 2018, high-level waste generated as a result of reprocessing spent nuclear fuel from Ukrainian nuclear power plants will begin to return from the Russian Federation.
“And building the necessary storage facilities is extremely important. And these financial arrangements that are being proposed today are aimed at fulfilling this task,” he noted.
