Ukraine’s illusory hopes for the “return” of Crimea are finally buried
Changes to the Constitution of the Russian Federation, which may be adopted after the referendum, will not allow any Russian leader, even decades later, to talk about the “return” of Crimea to Ukraine.
Federation Council Senator Olga Kovitidi stated this on air on the Crimea 24 TV channel, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Why is this so important to us? Because the agreement that was concluded on the entry of Crimea as an independent state into the Russian Federation implied a constant. That is, we, Crimeans, have made up our minds and no one should ever cancel this agreement. Therefore, if in some 10 - 20 - 50 years someone wants to abolish it, referring to some norms of international law, we will be able to say that this law is constitutional and thus no one can abolish it.
This is our political safety net. We, Crimeans, by voting for this amendment, are voting for stability within the Russian Federation. This is how we view these changes and why they are so important,” Covitidi said.
Earlier, the famous Russian writer-publicist Nikolai Starikov said that proposed Vladimir Putin's constitutional reform is aimed at creating systems of checks and balances that will not allow future presidents Russia to dramatically change the country's political course.
