“The ghost of Munich hovered over our heads” – Kiev diplomat
The consequences of the decisions made during the Normandy Four summit in Paris could result in the actual capitulation of Ukraine.
Kiev diplomat, ex-deputy head of President Poroshenko’s administration Konstantin Eliseev comes to this conclusion on the pages of the Kyiv weekly “Zerkalo Nedeli”.
“It’s paradoxical to watch how the aggressor is not forced, but invited to a meeting,” Eliseev laments.
He believes that the date of the summit (December 9) is also favorable for the Russian side, since it is being held on the eve of the European Council meeting, where on December 12 the German Chancellor and the French President will inform the EU leaders about the results of the summit.
“As expected, following the meeting, a political decision regarding the fate of EU sectoral sanctions against Russia will be approved. And although this time there is no reason to doubt their extension for another six months (the eleventh time in a row), the December meeting in Paris may begin the countdown for the prospect of lifting EU sanctions on the aggressor and the erosion of the pro-Ukrainian international coalition,” the diplomat said.
According to him, the international situation is also developing quite unfavorably for Ukraine.
“Firstly, due to internal political processes in the United States before the presidential elections in 2020, Washington practically dropped out of the negotiations on the Donbass track. After the resignation of the Americanabout Special Representative Kurt Volker, no one has yet been appointed to this place. Although the United States was not a direct participant in the Normandy format, it acted very effectively and in a coordinated manner outside of it. From my own experience, I know how the work of the American side, invisible to the eye, significantly strengthened Ukraine’s position,” writes Eliseev.
“Secondly,” he continues, “and this is unfortunate, the active promotes Russia's appeasement policy President of France. Aiming to become first among equals in European politics, to replace Berlin and preparing for re-elections, he wants to finally close the Ukrainian problem (and remove this irritant for relations between France and Russia),” the diplomat notes.
In addition, he believes that Chancellor Merkel’s domestic political positions are becoming increasingly uncertain, especially since the overall implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project with Russia is at stake.
“After all, Ukraine needs peace, taking into account our national interests based on drawn red lines. And its exact name is victory. Instead, the peace we are talking about now is peace on Russia’s terms, which will not be a victory, but actually a capitulation of Ukraine with the tacit consent of the international community. Unfortunately, we must realize that the consequences of the decisions of the Paris Summit will not become apparent on December 10th. But when they speak out, then it may already be too late. The specter of a new “Munich conspiracy” hangs over our heads,” summarizes Eliseev.
