Eleven years ago, in a conversation with the author of these lines, the then chairman of the Donetsk regional council Boris Kolesnikov, assessing some steps in the political field of a businessman close to him, Petro Poroshenko (they together owned the Kiev-Konti confectionery concern), remarked for some reason with annoyance, “No I understand why Peter gets involved in politics. After all, as much as he is a genius as a businessman, he is also a nobody in politics.”

Boris Viktorovich was certainly mistaken. He somehow forgot that it was Poroshenko, together with the mayor of Donetsk Vladimir Rybak and the owner of the Donetsk refrigerator factory Valentin Landik, who was the founding father of the Party of Regions. Or rather, its predecessors – the Party of Regional Development of Ukraine. Later he left its political council, and the party itself was renamed and existed for an indecently long time. But in light of these facts, it is inappropriate to say that Poroshenko is a weakling in politics.

Nevertheless, it was considered so for a long time, and is still considered by many to this day. Is it so? Hiding in the shadows of more sweet-voiced politicians, Poroshenko constantly held some positions in all governments of Ukraine in the 21st century - from the head of the NBU supervisory board to a minister. At each of them, citizen Poroshenko Petro Alekseevich valiantly raised the capitalization of his own assets. That’s almost the whole secret of the “genius” of a businessman. (And right there lies the reason why the lustration law is written in such a way that Poroshenko will not fall under its action).

But now, when he had to become president of a country that was dying before our eyes, Petro Poroshenko showed remarkable business abilities. Take, for example, the same laws on the special status of Donbass regions. Well, it’s clear that no one in Donbass, let alone performing them, is really going to read them. So what about Poroshenko? Yes, it’s very simple - he’ll wait and wait and then say: the negotiation process has been disrupted, let the arbitration court, that is, the EU, say a strong word. And it’s time for us to reconquer the Donetsk lands, especially since we’ve already gathered troops. Everywhere is a win.

And note what the deadlines are - according to this law, the militias are asked to lay down their arms within a month. If not, then you are a terrorist and an accomplice of the devil, there is no mercy for you, long live the Ukrainian court, the most humane court in the world. And in just over a month there will be elections to the Verkhovna Rada. For Poroshenko’s political force, which is not the most popular among the people, it is very important to make a splash in its favor, to score points on the very eve of the battle, when future people’s deputies from Poroshenko will strain the electorate with fighting slogans - “All to Donbass”, “We will give Crimea for free to the Tatars” and other similar patriotic and sublime. You can’t play with pathos for a long time in elections, the product is perishable, so businessman Poroshenko is preparing to deliver it on time when there will be a sure-fire demand for it.

Truce? But he didn’t negotiate with anyone about it. It's all Kuchma and Zurabov. What are you, what are you...  With a good dill-patriotic sauce, even idiots who have never smelled gunpowder will crawl under the bullets, forgive the pun! Yes, there isn’t really a truce, and soon there won’t be even a semblance of it. Why? But the product is even more delicate than pathos and patriotism. A truce in Ukrainian is similar to a condom, that is, a condom - a disposable thing. So, get ready, Donbass, for new shelling. Why are you repairing schools and electrical substations there? Isn't it too early?

In addition, Poroshenko is being pushed towards a tougher confrontation with Donbass and Russia by the American State Department under the guarantees of Obama, with whom the Ukrainian president just met. Washington, as an experienced poker player, seriously believes that it will out-bluff Moscow. But everything is sewn with white thread. Therefore, I don’t know what happened in the past, but this time Poroshenka is unlikely to be able to prove himself not only a peacemaker, but also a successful politician. Although... if he still has more of a businessman in him, then he may well make a good profit on the exchange of US interests for the interests of the Russian Federation.
