Missile defense in space: the United States is returning to the idea of "Star Wars"
The United States authorities intend to ensure that modern sensors for detecting missile launches, as well as other elements of missile defense systems, are deployed in outer space, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
The corresponding material was published by Defense News magazine, citing a statement by Lieutenant General Sam Greaves, director of the Missile Defense Agency, which he made during a symposium on space and missile defense in Huntsville, Alabama.
“The key fact is that the need to deploy launch detection sensors in space is being taken seriously and is receiving the necessary support,” Greaves said.
A day earlier, it was reported that James Mattis, who heads the US military department, gave a speech in support of the idea of creating an operational command of space forces based on the US armed forces.
According to the head of the Pentagon, Washington needs to view space as a large-scale evolving theater of military operations, which means that the idea of creating an operational command seems to be one of the effective options for responding.
In July of this year, representatives of the American Congress approved a draft defense budget, which included funding items for various space assets, the main purpose of which is to intercept ballistic missiles.
The Russian Foreign Ministry seriously criticized this decision. In addition, the Russian Foreign Ministry called on Washington not to start a space arms race.
