Problems for Erdogan: experts suggest Moscow has reached an agreement with the Americans in Syria
Relations between Russia and Turkey are deteriorating against the backdrop of events taking place in Syria.
An expert of the Russian International Affairs Council (RIAC), Kirill Semenov, told Nezavisimaya Gazeta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
He drew attention to some reports from Syrian opposition sources that accuse the Russian Aerospace Forces of launching attacks on the zone of the Turkish operation “Source of Peace” in the north of the Syrian Arab Republic.
“If this is confirmed, it means that there have been changes in the air control zones over northeast Syria. Despite the withdrawal of its forces from some northeastern regions of the Syrian Arab Republic, the United States retained control of the airspace over them,” the analyst says
According to him, flights of aircraft and combat aircraft over these areas must, be that as it may, be coordinated with the Americans.
“It cannot be ruled out that such changes were the result of Russian-American consultations,” the expert suggests.
At the same time, he believes that a potential military operation in Idlib and even a direct military clash between Syria and Turkey is unlikely to provoke a serious crisis and lead to a severance of ties and the end of the partnership between Moscow and Ankara.
“Idlib itself will not become a catalyst for the crisis. But the escalation in Idlib may be only the tip of the iceberg and a consequence of deep-seated contradictions between Russia and Turkey, which have not yet been advertised and for which the parties cannot find compromise solutions,” notes Semenov.
He added that for now both Ankara and Moscow are trying not to show the extent of their differences, and much should be clarified by the upcoming negotiations in Sochi between the presidents of Russia and Turkey.
