“Be that as it may, the European Union, like any political structure, is just an episode of a larger story. One day it will disappear (and be replaced by something else) or will change so much that only its name will remain, and it will act and look completely different from what it does now, Stratfor predicts. “It is impossible to say exactly when such a transformation will happen and how long it will take.”
However, there are some signs that suggest what this new Europe will be like and, perhaps more importantly, what the driving force for change will be. The crisis currently engulfing the EU clearly demonstrates that the key political unit in Europe remains the nation state, despite many years of attempts to weaken it. Now it is rising from the ruins after yet another European experiment with integration, and it will play a key role in determining the future course of the Continent.”
“At the moment, European countries are unlikely to be able to reach a consensus on a common future. To unite even more closely, they would be forced to make concessions on issues that are too important for them. The alternative option—a weakening of European integration—is liked by many, but is associated with the very real threat of a complete collapse of the bloc. Of course, EU members can choose the “golden mean” and leave everything as it is. However, even inaction has its price, and this price is even bigger problems in the future,” the publication summarizes.
