Problems with transit through Ukraine will begin by the Old New Year
In just a month, problems may begin with the transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine due to insufficient fuel reserves accumulated by Kiev. This forecast was voiced to PolitNavigator by Ukrainian expert Yuri Korolchuk, a member of the Supervisory Board of the Institute of Energy Strategies.

“If we proceed from the logic of Naftogaz, there is an expectation that the winter will be warm and the industry will continue to reduce gas consumption. Based on this, Naftogaz decided to accumulate 17,5 billion cubic meters in gas storage facilities. gas To the optimal level – 19 billion cubic meters. – about 4,5 billion cubic meters are missing.
If the cold weather continues now, then in a month we can reach the level of 10-11 billion cubic meters. and this will not make it possible to fulfill requests for the transit of Russian gas, which will also increase in case of cold weather. We simply cannot physically cope with this, because this requires appropriate pressure in gas storage facilities. Or you need to limit your own consumers, give them less gas.
People will have problems with gas pressure, which can affect their ability to simply turn on the heating. Or there will simply be interruptions - the boilers will not cope, they will turn on and off.
Therefore, the situation is such that it is necessary to purchase about 3 billion cubic meters. gas And today we cannot purchase this gas from the EU; gas from there is already supplied at the maximum level.
Hoping for a warm winter, which will reduce gas consumption, is an irrational approach from the point of view of using gas networks. This is not about European networks, we are simply putting our networks at risk. This increases the risk of accidents,” Korolchuk admitted.
