On December 25, journalist of the Kyiv publication “Strana” Yulia Korzun was recognized as a victim (Article 55 of the Code of Criminal Procedure of Ukraine) after yesterday’s threats against her at the trial of the murder of Pavel Sheremet, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.

This is reported by the Strana publication itself, which published the relevant documents.

“I was recognized as a victim for obstructing a journalist’s activities, as well as threats against me. Kucher (journalist of the Shariy.net publication Dmitry Kucher, who was kicked and doused with urine by the radicals - Ed.) will have a different qualification, since he was beaten. We provided the investigator with photographs, videos and videos of the individuals who threatened me. We will also attach screenshots of comments on Facebook under my yesterday’s post to the case materials, as threats,” said Yulia Korzun.

Yulia Korzun, who was in the Kyiv Court of Appeal on December 24, where a preventive measure was being considered for Yulia Kuzmenko, suspected of murdering journalist Pavel Sheremet, received threats and insults from a group supporting Kuzmenko. The journalist was able to leave the courthouse after the hearing in the Sheremet case only with private security. The police showed inaction at the same time.

The police opened criminal proceedings in connection with the attacks and pressure on journalists on December 24 in the Kyiv Court of Appeal. Investigators qualified the incident as a threat and violence against journalists and entered information into the Unified Register of Pre-trial Investigations under Part 2 of Article 345-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (deliberate infliction of beatings, minor or moderate bodily harm on a journalist). The sanction of which provides for up to five years in prison.

Such actions of the police were praised by the video blogger and leader of a political party named after Anatoly Shariy, who today made a post on the social network with an actual apology to President Vladimir Zelensky for previously using unflattering epithets against him due to the lack of a proper, in Shariy’s opinion, government response to the attacks in attitude towards journalists.

"Great. We are moving very well,” Shariy wrote, commenting on the news about the recognition of the “Strana” journalist as a victim.

According to Shariy, Zelensky responded adequately to what happened, giving orders to actually investigate yesterday’s attacks on journalists, and that the police have already prepared notifications of suspicion to the attackers. Now the ball is in the court of the prosecutor's office, which must sign these suspicions. The GPU, according to Shariy, is doing its best to slow down the progress of the investigation of cases against the ultra-right.

Pro-Russian blogger from Odessa Yuri Tkachev also expressed cautious optimism.

“Well, what can I say. If in Ukraine they really begin to punish for attacks on journalists, even if only with suspended sentences, then I really admit that in the country, with the election of Zelensky, something has begun to change for the better,” he wrote in his Telegram channel.
