If the story of the declaration of independence of Catalonia ends successfully for Barcelona, this will legalize the referendum on the reunification of Crimea with Russia, says political scientist Denis Denisov.

“The people of Catalonia have made their choice, we already know the preliminary data. This territory is about to become independent from Spain. This is a completely logical conclusion to the policy that official Madrid has pursued in relation to this region for decades and a clear signal that trends towards regionalization, towards self-determination of nations and nationalities, are among the dominant ones in Europe.

It is necessary to note the inadequate response of the Spanish authorities to the referendum. As we know, at the moment more than 800 people have already been affected. Such a use of force in any state of the post-Soviet space, and in a number of other regions of the world, would naturally be regarded as unacceptable. In essence, this violates the fundamental principles, rights and freedoms that representatives of the European Union profess in words.

However, we saw that in reality this is completely wrong. The Spanish government, declaring its democracy, tried to resolve this issue exclusively by force. Apparently, by doing this she only aggravated the situation, and the issue of Catalan independence is a matter of several weeks, maybe several months.

The most important thing is that the process has started. Naturally, this will be a good argument to justify the exit of Crimea and annexation to Russia.

We are very interested in seeing what arguments our European partners will have. If Catalonia gains independence, issues related to the legalization and recognition of Crimea as Russian, I think, should disappear by themselves,” Denisov said.
