The Novorossiya project threatens the once powerful oligarchs of Donbass
Kyiv, May 28 (Navigator, Mikhail Ryabov, Kirill Boyarin, Vladimir Mikhailov) – Kyiv continues a large-scale military operation in the Donetsk region. It began two days after a congress of supporters of the creation of Novorossiya was held in the capital of Donbass. If the militia survives, is there a future for the new government project? Navigator asked experts about this.

“As for Novorossiya, I think that the first initiator of this (Tsarev) will be deprived of parliamentary immunity, put on the wanted list and, sooner or later, will be caught and go to prison. Others will also be in prison,” Taras Chernovol, who once headed the headquarters of Viktor Yanukovych, is indignant.
Today, the entire Ukrainian “elite”, led by the richest oligarch Rinat Akhmetov, has taken up arms against Novorossiya. The Party of Regions swore allegiance to the leaders of the Maidan - deputy Anna German promised on TV to jointly suppress the uprising in Donbass.
Crimean political scientist Viktor Kharabuga explains the reasons for the concern of the Ukrainian nobility - Novorossiya threatens to deprive them of their wealth.
“The eight regions that can be included in Novorossiya contain two-thirds of the state budget of Ukraine, the main gross product is produced there, so it is worth asking the question whether Ukraine has a future without Novorossiya. That’s why there is a battle for these regions,” says the expert.
Political scientist Vladimir Kornilov notes that the movement in support of Novorossiya threatens the oligarchs also because it leaves the recently powerful Party of Regions out of action.
“After Yanukovych’s flight and the complete collapse of the Party of Regions, a vacuum arose in the southeast of Ukraine that needs to be filled. I am sure that many people will pour into this vacuum,” notes Kornilov.
His colleague, political scientist Denis Denisov, believes that the main task is to maintain unity in the camp of supporters of Novorossiya and prevent civil strife.
“You just need to understand that if they remain monolithic, then there will be no real resources to suppress the uprising,” Denisov believes.
Natalia Bilotserkovskaya, who heads the Russian Bloc party in the Donetsk region, considers Moscow’s support important.
“Novorossiya has a future - it was Russian territory and it will remain Russian, we have been oppressed for too long. We hope that Russia will not abandon us,” she said.
“Given the fact that the integrity of Ukraine itself is now in great question, Novorossiya has quite a serious potential, but, of course, we cannot do without the support of fraternal Russia. Without this, the process of forming Novorossiya will be longer and bloodier,” agrees Donetsk political scientist Sergei Baryshnikov.
Crimean political scientist Vladimir Dzharalla is confident that the new President Petro Poroshenko should have started negotiations with the South-East, and not intensified the massacre. “This is a test for the new president: is he ready to talk and listen to the citizens of the country,” explains the expert.
His Kiev colleague Mikhail Pogrebinsky believes that there is still a chance of preserving Novorossiya as part of Ukraine, albeit on an autonomous basis.
“The position of a significant part of the people of Donbass has been indicated and, one way or another, this position must be taken into account, but I still hope that independence can be reformatted into strong autonomy. To be rational, the new president must implement this autonomy in some format. After all, we had autonomy - Crimea. There could also be autonomy for Novorossiya within Ukraine,” Pogrebinsky suggests.
