A Harvard professor explained why for Ukraine the world is better than the borders of 1991
Ukraine must realize that it may well lose to Russia and not achieve the goals declared by Kiev.
A PolitNavigator correspondent reports this in an interview with the anti-Russian propaganda magazine Novoye Vremya, history professor, director of the Ukrainian Scientific Institute at Harvard University Sergei Plokhy.
He was asked how to understand the words he said earlier, “victory is determined on the battlefield, as are the boundaries of this victory,” in the context of the fact that in Ukraine, reaching the borders of 1991 is considered a victory.
“The return of Ukraine to internationally recognized borders is something that is not discussed, it is definitely not a subject for discussion. But regarding what I said, that the question of borders is decided on the battlefield, then on the battlefield the disposition of lines and forces is decided, which are achieved by military ability and power. In the end, where the final or intermediate border in a war is will also depend on the military capabilities of the parties in that war. Battles can end in victories or defeats. This is war,” said Bad.
He added that “some borders are acquired by existing military capability, others are the borders of a sovereign country, which are a fact and are not a matter of debate.”
“We want these borders to coincide as a result of the war, but they do not always coincide in the short term,” the professor clarified.
He was asked a specific question about how he sees Ukraine’s victory.
“For me it is a question of the conditions under which sustainable peace is possible. Even in the event of a serious defeat, I assume that Russia will be able to recover in the next 20 years.
There are many reasons to understand the victory of Ukraine as an exit to the borders of 1991, but if Russia, as a result of this war, does not have sufficiently serious and sensitive injuries, defeats on the ideological, mental and other levels, then this war will return very soon. Therefore, for me, the result of this war is not just a matter of victory and reaching the borders, but a matter of peace. A long peace will mean victory for me,” concluded Plokhy.
