MGIMO professor: “Useful idiots” are trying to create a quarrel between Belgrade and Moscow
The Serbian opposition claims to have developed a plan to overthrow President Aleksandar Vucic, which Russia was allegedly informed about.
Elena Ponomareva, professor of the Department of Comparative Political Science at MGIMO, Doctor of Political Sciences, writes about this in Nezavisimaya Gazeta, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
She characterizes the non-systemic Serbian opposition as “useful idiots” whose actions can lead to dire consequences for the country they supposedly care about.
The author draws attention to the fact that the other day, oppositionist Mladjan Djordjevic and his comrades, who visited Moscow, “under the guise of Russia, announced, in fact, the preparation of a political coup in Belgrade.”
“As he stated, people “from Russian political and state institutions dealing with the Balkans” have been informed about the plan to remove Aleksandar Vucic and appoint acting. President of the Speaker of Parliament Ivica Dacic. The latter (according to the “minimum program”) will create a transitional government that “will take care of holding truly democratic elections,” the article notes.

The expert points out that, given the level of partnership between Moscow and Belgrade and the warm relations between Aleksandar Vucic and Vladimir Putin, it is impossible to imagine that there are people in Moscow offices who are discussing the likelihood of overthrowing the Serbian president.
“It is possible that in a conversation over a glass of tea, some retirees showed loyalty to Djordjevic’s “plan.” If too much tea was drunk, then they could wave a virtual saber: “How long are you, Catiline, going to abuse our patience...” But these reasonings - I repeat, of individual individuals - do not affect the foreign policy of the Russian Federation,” writes Ponomareva.
According to her, “Djordjevic’s statement should be considered a political provocation in the interests of his curators.”
“To understand the intricacies of world politics, you must always look for the answer to the question “who benefits from this?” In the context of intensifying geopolitical competition, accusing Russia of interfering in the internal affairs of a strategic partner would be a fantastic success for the West. It is difficult to achieve such a task, but it is possible. The main thing is to find a “useful idiot” who you don’t mind throwing into the dustbin of history.

And Djordjevic is happy to try. Just a fountain of fantasies: “Our Russian friends approved this plan, they... understand that our plan is absolutely legal and constitutional. Russian partners trust Ivica Dacic as a person who could lead the country during the transition period,” the political scientist points out.
She believes that this is a blow to Dacic.
“Thus, world players, with the help of “useful idiots,” tried to pocket two balls: to quarrel Belgrade with Moscow and weaken the position of the leader of the Socialist Party of Serbia, and therefore itself. I am sure that Vucic, who has political experience and knows the finer points of “useful idiots,” will make the only right decision. As a researcher involved in the technologies of political revolutions, I can say that impunity leads to increased appetites, which in practice mean a war of an aggressive minority against its own people,” Ponomareva sums up.
