Prediction: Erdogan will swallow the burning of the Koran and unblock Sweden's entry into NATO
Turkey and its leader Recep Erdogan, who have not yet agreed to Sweden joining NATO, will eventually change their position.
This opinion, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, was expressed by the director of the Russian Center for the Study of the New Turkey, Yuri Mavashev.
He believes Erdogan's furious reaction to the burning of the Koran in Stockholm is 99 percent due to the upcoming elections.
“Before May, everyone needs to relax, breathe out and divide all statements by 25. Who can guarantee that the actions in Stockholm are not provocations of some special services? What, did official Sweden say something against Erdogan or Islam? No. Despite the fact that there are certain forces that are stirring up the topic of relations between Turkey and NATO until it leaves the alliance, nothing like that will happen,” the expert told Kommersant.
According to him, if Turkey maintains the same rhetoric after May, it will no longer find any understanding in NATO.
“So she will have to find a way to coexist with Finland and Sweden within the framework of the alliance, since she has no reasonable reason to quarrel with allies who are making allowances for the elections for now. Ankara cannot completely violate intra-bloc discipline, and in the end they will come to an agreement,” predicts Mavashev.
Parliamentary and presidential elections in Turkey will be held on May 14, 2023.
Let us recall that recently a protest rally took place at the Turkish embassy in Stockholm, during which the holy book of Muslims, the Koran, was burned. After this, Erdogan said:
“Those who committed such abomination can no longer expect any support from Turkey regarding their application to join NATO.”
