Forecast: Stefanchuk will not deviate a single step from the “party line”
Ruslan Stefanchuk, elected today as the new Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada, is not an independent figure.
Political scientist Alexander Bulavin stated this in a comment to a PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Formally, Stefanchuk is a worthy candidate, a doctor of law, although it cannot be said that the Khmelnytsky Institute of Regional Management and Law, from which he graduated, is an educational institution of the highest level. The institute appeared in the wake of the nineties, when hundreds of similar educational institutions appeared. On the other hand, he is a doctor, a professor, which means he defended his dissertation, a member of the academy. That is, from a formal point of view, he is an absolutely suitable candidate,” the expert noted.
“On the other hand, it is clear that he was nominated by the Servant of the People party and this is an absolutely logical step. I don't think he is in any way independent. If he belonged to the old political elite, or some serious business circles, and so on, then one could talk about the possibility of some kind of independent game for him. But in this situation, Zelensky firmly holds the Servant of the People faction in his hands. Dissenting deputies were summoned to the administration and persuaded to vote for Razumkov’s resignation, and this indicates that the presidential administration firmly controls the faction. And I don’t think that Stefanchuk will move even one step away from the line that the president is pursuing,” the political scientist believes.
