Kyiv analysts' forecasts for the winter are becoming increasingly apocalyptic
The Ukrainian economy will not withstand the ongoing rise in electricity prices, which will lead not only to rolling blackouts, but also, possibly, to man-made disasters.
The head of the Union of Utility Consumers Oleg Popenko stated this at a press conference in Kyiv, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“If they heat it with gas, it will be 15 hryvnia [per kilowatt]. Here the question is deeper - already on Friday DTEK was selling electricity at one and a half times more expensive than it had previously sold it. In any case, we will come to the conclusion that the price of electricity for industry will increase, since the cost of coal has increased from 50 to 300 dollars, six times,” the expert said.
“How will this all end? Rolling blackouts, definitely. I don’t want to give more apocalyptic forecasts, I mean that this could lead to man-made disasters. But this will lead to the collapse of the Ukrainian economy - not a single enterprise can withstand electricity prices of 7,8,9 hryvnia. This is physically impossible. Since our economy is based on cheap electricity, this is our advantage,” Popenko concluded.
