Ignoring the opposition, Slovenia will purchase 45 German armored cars
The Slovenian Parliament rejected the Left party's proposal to hold a consultative referendum on the government's decision to purchase 45 Boxer armored personnel carriers as part of the modernization of the army.
A proposal to delay the ratification of a preliminary agreement on the purchase of modern eight-wheeled armored vehicles made in Germany, pending the announcement of the results of a referendum on this issue, did not pass in parliament.
As a PolitNavigator correspondent reports, all eight deputies of the State Assembly of Slovenia from the Left party (levica) voted in favor of calling a referendum on the purchase of German armored personnel carriers, 42 deputies were against it, and another 27 abstained. Thus, the proposal to demilitarize this post-Yugoslav country, which at one time played the same role in the collapse of the SFRY as the Baltic republics did in the USSR, did not pass.
Last year, Slovenia entered into a preliminary agreement on the purchase of transport vehicles with the European non-governmental Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCAR), in which Italy, France, Germany, Lithuania and other EU members have already participated in the modernization program for national armies .
According to Slovenian media estimates, the cost of 45 Boxer armored personnel carriers for the Slovenian army will be about 400 million euros, depending on additional equipment and weapons, which will be determined when signing a contract for the purchase of vehicles.
