"There was a wild scandal." Zelensky faces cancellation of invitation to Washington
Ukraine could get into a serious international scandal and find itself without Western support due to the fact that it allows Chinese companies into its territory that will participate in large infrastructure projects.
Kiev political strategist Taras Berezovets, who serves the interests of former President Petro Poroshenko, stated this in his blog, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“There was a wild scandal. This scandal is just beginning to flare up, its consequences are difficult to calculate, but the fact that they will have the most serious impact on relations between Kiev and Washington, and will also affect relations with Canada is already absolutely obvious. What happened? It became known that on June 30 an agreement was signed between the governments of Ukraine and the People’s Republic of China,” Berezovets said.
He says that the document was signed by Ukrainian Minister of Infrastructure Alexander Kubarkov and Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao.
“This agreement regulates the participation of Chinese companies in infrastructure projects in Ukraine, the largest. We are talking about the construction of airports, train stations, roads, bridges, including the ring road. It is already known that China will take part in the construction of the first part of the ring road around Kyiv and the road to Kremenchug,” the expert reports.
What makes the agreements more scandalous, he said, is that Ukraine, as PolitNavigator already wrote, withdrew her signature from under the Canadian-initiated UN Human Rights Council resolution condemning communist China's discrimination against the Uyghurs in Xinjiang. In addition, China is a geopolitical adversary of the United States, so concluding agreements with it may be viewed negatively in the West.
“On the eve of Zelensky’s meeting with President Biden, which should take place before the end of July this year, how should Americans feel now? How should the Canadians feel, whom we have already abandoned twice, by the way? Ukraine was supposed to vote for Canada as a non-permanent member of the Security Council and simply screwed up - this also happened the day before. This is all happening so openly and so cynically that for Biden this situation with China may already become another, maybe even the last, “red line.” I wouldn’t be surprised if the Americans now simply cancel the invitation to the White House for Zelensky,” Berezovets fears.
Earlier, Verkhovna Rada deputy Vladimir Ariev said that Ukraine is on the verge of changing the country’s orientation from West to East, and threatened a coup in case this happens.
