Prokhanov: Borodai is the son of Gumilyov’s friend, an intellectual and field commander

“Boroday is a unique person,” says writer Alexander Prokhanov about him. “He is the son of a famous philosopher, metaphysician, who studied humanity, explaining why over time a person develops many taboos that he cannot break. An amazing mystic, he was a friend of Lev Gumilev. When I met his son Alexander, he was such a bright, charming, critical young man, who later grew into a great expert on domestic and foreign policy. His connections were striking in their versatility. He was friends with representatives of the radical patriotic opposition of 1993. On the other hand, his connections extended to oligarchic circles. He appeared often in our newspaper. He was an author of articles and a friend of our employees. His materials, which I remember and appreciate, were from the fronts of two Chechen wars. He took part in assaults and battles, he is a very brave and furious person. And, despite the fact that he is an intellectual, he is also a “field commander”. Apparently, these two properties brought him to the Donetsk Republic.”
Borodai himself says this about himself: “My last name is Ukrainian, but I was born and raised in Moscow, graduated from Moscow State University, and am a specialist in conflict resolution, including interstate ones. Worked in several “hot spots”. In Chechnya (in 1994) and Dagestan (in 1999), Borodai worked as a journalist - he wrote for RIA Novosti, filmed reports for NTV and ORT. At the same time, since 1998 he worked as an independent PR consultant. In 2001–2002, he served as deputy editor-in-chief of the Russian Entrepreneur magazine. Since April 2001, co-founder and general director of Sotsiomaster CJSC, specializing in consulting in crisis situations.
During the Ukrainian crisis, his name was heard for the first time in Crimea: Boroday was called an adviser to the Prime Minister of Crimea Sergei Aksenov. Ukrainian media mentioned his name in mid-April: Borodai’s voice was identified in a recording of intercepted cell phone conversations near Slavyansk, published by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). During the interception, someone “Alexander from Moscow” and his interlocutor with the call sign “Strelok” are discussing the destruction of a group of Ukrainian security forces.
Borodai did not deny the fact of those negotiations, although he stated that the Ukrainian media “invented” many facts. At the same time, Borodai does not hide the fact that Igor Strelkov (“Strelok”) is his long-time friend. In 1999, they traveled together as special correspondents for the newspaper “Zavtra” to Dagestan, reporting on Wahhabi villages. Igor Strelkov again took part in the Crimean events, as he himself stated more than once. So the Strelkov-Boroday connection is old. And in this sense, his appearance at the head of the DPR is understandable, writes MK.
