Sources of the publication in the Prosecutor General's Office report that the summons of the top officials of the state is allegedly connected with the fact that back in October, Yanukovych's defender Maxim Gerasko was removed - they say, due to unprofessionalism. In his place, lawyer Igor Lyashenko was appointed, whose candidacy was most likely passed with the full approval of the leadership of the GPU.
“The previous two lawyers provided by the free legal aid center (Meshechek and Gerasko) did not follow the scenario of a quick consideration of the case that we sought, they did not even try to create the appearance of legal competition in the process, took a lot of time from the process and then left it completely , explained a source in the GPU. “Because of this, the process of Yanukovych’s treason dragged on for many months, and this violated the plans of the Prosecutor General to quickly pronounce a verdict. After this, the condition was set to find a state lawyer more suitable for this task. As a result, Lyashenko appeared.”
According to the source, “the new lawyer will now interrogate key witnesses for the prosecution, including many high-ranking officials - Parubiy, Avakov, Yatsenyuk and others.”
“Since we have a much more constructive relationship with Lyashenko, this lawyer will not lead the court into a dead end, will not raise questions that would again take a lot of time from the GPU,” explains the source. “I think this is also why President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko agreed to give his testimony. The head of our department, Yuriy Lutsenko, informed him that the process had finally begun, and he gave him guarantees that during the interrogation the president would not be interfered with by unscrupulous tricks, that he would be allowed to express his position. Considering that in the next two months we have a chance to convict Yanukovych, the speech of the leader of our country at this trial on the very eve of the anniversary of the shootings on the Maidan will be both a good reason to appeal to all Ukrainians and a worthy response to all those who accused us of delaying this process.”
The next court hearing in the Yanukovych case is scheduled for Monday, December 11.
On November 28, 2016, Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko announced via video a message about suspicion of ex-President of Ukraine Yanukovych of “high treason, aiding and abetting representatives of the Russian government.”
