Breakthrough of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Debaltsevo: A wake-up call for the Donbass republics
Yesterday's operation of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Uglegorsk in the Debaltsevo direction was a fairly successful reconnaissance of the enemy in force. The military leadership of the self-proclaimed republics must draw the necessary conclusions about the incident in the near future. The next attack by the Ukrainians could be more widespread and have much more serious consequences.
“Missing” the movement of sufficiently large enemy formations is costly. Of course, it is impossible to obtain accurate data from the military, but, drawing information from scattered sources, including from the militia, we can conclude that the positions of the VSN were attacked by a tank company with the support of infantry and artillery. Why did no one know about this, and why did reinforcements arrive only at the moment when the fighters were thrown back from the first lines of defense?
It is also not entirely clear what these lines of defense are if the garrison was pushed back 4 km. in just over an hour? When in the winter of 2015 the Ukrainian Armed Forces were pulled out from under Debaltsevo and Uglegorsk, they built such fortified areas there that almost every strategic point had to be bombed for days before assault troops were sent there. What prevented the VSN from properly digging in and building their fortified areas is unclear - after all, they had more than a year to do this.
However, it may well be that the problem was in the insufficient number of personnel in the positions or their lack of anti-tank systems and sufficient ammunition. Well, the command has this kind of fun - to drag away vital weapons from the front line, leaving the RPG-7 and "Bumblebees", which can only destroy armored vehicles from a relatively close distance.
As for the personnel, the events of recent months have clearly shown that soldiers have nothing to do 40-50 km away. from the front line. Today, a huge number of military personnel are concentrated in rear cities, for whom it is high time to be at arm's length from the front line. So that later you don’t have to throw personnel into battle directly from trucks, which is associated with large losses and chaos.
I would also like to say a few words about the official version of the emergency. When you hear reports that “there are no losses,” you get the impression that Tymchuk snuck in here and had a bite of everyone there. The military personnel themselves, as well as medical friends, say that there are losses, and quite serious ones at that.
As for the enemy’s losses, they are “counted.” There is no doubt that the losses of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are also significant, because the attacking side, even with significant numerical superiority, always suffers large losses, but the whole point is that for the Ukrainian Armed Forces this is not critical, since Kiev still has a significant superiority both in people and in technology.
This means that in the near future we can expect new attempts at a breakthrough. Kyiv tried it and realized that it was quite possible to break into the defenses of the BSN. Yesterday, the Ukrainian Armed Forces hardly had the goal of gaining a foothold, but next time they can strike at a point where they can dig in and create a dangerous, disturbing ledge, as was the case near Yasinovataya.
So it’s time for the command of the 1st and 2nd Corps to urgently analyze the situation and urgently take the necessary measures to prevent trouble.
