Farewell, Pushcha: Lukashenko has set the task of transferring Belarus from gas to firewood
Belarus must harvest more firewood so as not to heat houses with Russian gas.
President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko announced this today at a meeting with Minister of Forestry Vitaly Drozhzha, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We ourselves need to clearly determine how much wood chips, pellets, etc. we need in order to replace natural gas for heating. Well, we are burning an imported resource, but leaving a huge resource under our feet. We need to decide in the future how much of this firewood you will prepare for internal needs.
We must heat people's homes, cities, towns, and villages with firewood. We have enough of this renewable resource. In this way, we will be able to reduce the consumption of natural gas, for which we pay good money,” Lukashenko said.
He also stated that a significant part of the forests of Belarus was lost during the years of the USSR.
“Then all commercial timber was sent in trains outside the country. We sent them to Germany or Romania, and they brought us furniture from there,” Lukashenko recalled.
He ordered a review of approaches to the use of natural gas in Belarus.
Previously, Lukashenko stated that residential heating would be transferred from Russian gas to electricity generated by the Belarusian nuclear power plant.
