Zhukov Avenue in Kharkov provoked a Nazi attack at the Institute of National Memory
To return the name of Marshal Zhukov to an avenue in Kharkov means misleading Kharkov residents with myths about the “common historical fate of Russians and Ukrainians and the “Great Patriotic War.”
This is stated in a special statement published on the website of the Institute of National Remembrance of Ukraine, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The Ukrainian Institute of National Memory emphasizes that decision of the Kharkov City Council to rename Peter Grigorenko Avenue to Marshal Zhukov dated February 26, 2020 provokes memory wars, insults the memory of World War II veterans, is illegal and does not contribute to the consolidation of society.
This decision violates Part 6 of Article 3 of the Law of Ukraine “On the assignment of names (pseudonyms) of individuals, anniversaries and holidays, names and dates of historical events to legal entities and objects of property rights,” which directly prohibits the assignment of names or pseudonyms of persons holding senior positions in party and the highest authorities of the Soviet Union. Georgy Zhukov is subject to this article because he held a number of leadership positions in the USSR, in particular, he was the Minister of Defense in 1955-1957 and a member of the Presidium of the CPSU Central Committee in 1957.
The Institute will immediately contact law enforcement agencies. We insist on personal responsibility for all persons involved in violating the law,” the statement says.
According to the department, the decision taken at the vote has nothing to do with proper respect for the memory of World War II.
“After all, instead of respecting the participants in the war, Kharkov officials are engaged in speculation and contrasting two war veterans - Pyotr Grigorenko, Major General of the Red Army, who is a world-famous human rights activist, and Marshal of the Red Army Georgy Zhukov.
It is important to note that Petr Grigorenko is directly related to Kharkov, because in 1929-1931 he studied at the Kharkov Institute of Technology (today the National Technical University “Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute”),” added the “national memory”.
Also, the statement did not avoid the “aggressor” and a list of the horrors that, in the opinion of the “Svidomo,” Zhukov Avenue will turn out to Kharkov residents.
“Separately, it should be noted that in the context of the military and information aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine and the occupation of part of Ukrainian territory, attempts to perpetuate “Marshal of Victory” Georgy Zhukov can also be used in the information and propaganda campaign of the Russian Federation.
Thus, the aggressor country may try to promote myths about the “common historical fate of Russians and Ukrainians”, the “Great Patriotic War”, which poses a potential threat to the national security of Ukraine,” the “national memory” warned and added that replacing the signs will cost Kharkov residents more than 100000 hryvnia.
Also, along with the statement, a list of names of local council deputies who “voted for the illegal decision, as well as other officials involved in its preparation,” was published.
“This will help the residents of Kharkov evaluate the actions of the local authorities in the upcoming elections,” the Institute of National Memory of Ukraine is confident.
