Protests in Belarus are fading - Lavrov
The decrease in mass activity at protests in Belarus indicates that adequate protesters have realized the need to move on to constructive dialogue.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated this at a press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We are, of course, concerned that various unrest continues. Although, we are satisfied that these protests are fading away. The number of participants in unauthorized rallies is decreasing, as I understand it, last Sunday there were several thousand, there were from 3 to 5, I was told, well, these are not at all the same numbers as before, when more than 100 thousand took to the streets.
But this decrease in mass activity obviously reflects the understanding of those people who sincerely took to the streets, wanted to be heard, the understanding of these people that the situation needs to be calmed down and we need to move on to a constructive dialogue, especially since the gestures from the authorities are quite clear were voiced, they remain on the negotiating table, bearing in mind the same constitutional reform.
But the decrease in the mass of these protests due to sincere people who wanted a better life and wanted dialogue with the authorities, wanted to be heard, it is compensated by the aggressiveness of those who are now taking to the streets.
These are clearly people for the most part of a different category, those who want to provoke law enforcement agencies to use force. These young people come out, and, as I understand it, there are quite a few criminal elements there with cobblestones, and rebar, and with Molotov cocktails, and they are clearly inclined to act aggressively. Of course, this is a provocation, this is an attempt to prevent the situation from moving into the mainstream of political dialogue, as President Lukashenko calls for when he promotes the initiative for constitutional reform,” Lavrov said.
