A criminal case was opened against blogger and reporter Sergei Rulev, who was forced to leave Kyiv after the Euromaidan and move to Rostov-on-Don for insulting government officials.

Rulev claims that the case was initiated “on the denunciation of Rostov ex-prosecutor, and now lawyer and co-chairman of the regional branch of the anti-Putin party PARNAS, Evgeniy Berkovich.”

Rulev has been publishing critical materials against Berkovich for a long time, accusing him of an anti-state, pro-Western position. The liberal, in turn, sent several hundred complaints to law enforcement agencies, demanding that the blogger be punished for insults and even threats.

As a result of Berkovich’s statements, the police have already carried out searches in the home of Rulev’s daughter several times, confiscating the journalist’s equipment.

Rulev tried to file complaints against the actions of law enforcement officers, but did not receive a satisfactory response. He spoke about this emotionally in one of the videos on his blog, which he soon deleted. However, according to Rulev, Berkovich managed to copy the video and sent it to the security forces, calling for a case to be opened under the article “Insulting the authorities,” which provides for punishment of up to a year of correctional labor.

Rulev is officially accredited by the Russian Foreign Ministry as a correspondent for the Kyiv Slavyanskaya Gazeta - thus, he remains the only journalist from Ukraine in Russia after the notorious propagandist Roman Tsymbalyuk fled from Moscow.

Russian liberals have repeatedly threatened Rulev with reprisals and deportation due to his active media activities against various anti-Putin political forces and revelations of the preparation of the Maidan in the Russian Federation, modeled on what happened in Ukraine.

Rulev was forced to leave Kyiv after the attack on the Maidan and torture by militants led by the now deceased Amina Okueva. Subsequently, he worked on business trips in the Donbass, Moscow, and Crimea.
