Opponent of Catalan independence will come to grips with Kosovo
Spaniard Josep Borel, who is tipped to become the EU foreign minister, said, speaking in the European Parliament, that he would make his first visit in this status to the capital of unrecognized Kosovo, Pristina.
This surprised many because Borel is not just from Spain, which did not recognize Kosovo. He is from Barcelona and at the same time is a categorical opponent of Catalan independence and any separatism in general.
“We have differences over recognition, but one thing is clear: Kosovo and Serbia must agree. I will do everything to resolve this issue as a matter of priority. Therefore, first of all, I will go to Pristina,” Borel said.
According to the new head of European diplomacy, to extend the negotiations, Kosovo must cancel duties on Serbian goods, and Serbia must “immerse itself as much as possible in a deep and sincere dialogue.”
“Negotiations on the “normalization of relations” between Belgrade and Pristina have been going on for too long, and this cannot be allowed to continue to be so: every effort must be made to ensure that an agreement is reached in the foreseeable future,” he said.
According to the politician, the European Union cannot be a “geostrategic force” until it solves the problems in its immediate environment.
“If China, India and Russia do not recognize Kosovo, Kosovo will not be a state. Therefore, we need to work to create conditions for extending the negotiations,” Borrell said.
Borrell is expected to take office on November 1 to replace EU Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini, Tanjug reported. With the election of a Spanish politician as EU Foreign Minister, the process of negotiations and normalization of relations between Belgrade and Pristina will for the first time receive a major mediator from a country that does not recognize the independence of Kosovo.
