As the participants of the action noted, Kiev mayor Vitaliy Klitschko for the first time showed such efficiency in convening an extraordinary session of Kyiv, sending SMS messages to deputies at night.
“They knew that we planned our action for 11-00, and therefore they quickly gathered an hour earlier,” the picketers emphasized.
It is worth noting that previously the management of the Zhovten cinema repeatedly complained that they were trying to “squeeze out” the establishment, and the current arson is associated with those who are trying to achieve the liquidation of the cinema.
“The Murashko House, Gostiny Dvor, the house on Shchekavitskaya and even the Agrarian University - all these buildings were set on fire,” noted the head of the public organization “Student Republic” Pavel Viknyansky in his speech. – Afterwards they were either captured by raiders, or such attempts took place. Previously, this happened under Yanukovych, but it has resumed now.”
The participants of the action played up the revolutionary theme inherent, it must be said, in the very name of the cinema, which received its name in honor of the October Revolution of 1917 (“Zhovten” translated into Russian as “October”). Some had posters with the inscription “Zhovtneva film revolution.” There was also a banner with the slogan of the student riot in Paris in 1968 - “Be realistic, demand the impossible.” There were also more radical calls like “I’ll light a cigarette from the developer’s burning house.”
In turn, deputies led by Klitschko, under pressure from the street, voted to create a charitable foundation, “Let’s Revive Together,” which will restore the cinema. Also at the session, three versions of arson were announced, which law enforcement officers are working on: hooliganism, arson due to the screening of a film dedicated to sexual minorities, and an attempted raider takeover.
“This is a symbol of Kyiv, a cinema that survived the fascist occupation, and nothing happened to it,” said Dmitry Gordon, editor of the Boulevard newspaper. “I am outraged when people appear in our city who believe that they can break everything like that, that they can throw fireworks, set fire to cinemas, and then raid them.”
The Zhovten cinema was set on fire on the evening of October 29. It is located in the center of Kyiv on Podol - the site may be of interest to developers. Earlier, the Kiev press reported that the current mayor Vitaliy Klitschko is planning a large-scale redistribution of capital real estate, and in his surrounded by many lobbyists for construction companies.
