Kyiv lawyer Novitskaya was sent to a pre-trial detention center - she faces up to 15 years for “treason”
Today, the Galitsky District Court of Lviv sent Kyiv lawyer Svetlana Novitskaya, accused of treason, to a pre-trial detention center, who on the eve of the hearings foresaw such a decision and expressed fears that she might not return alive from the dungeons.
The lawyer was imprisoned in a pre-trial detention center for two months without the right to post bail, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
According to local media, judge Vitaly Strelbitsky seized the laptops and phone. Svetlana Novitskaya faces 12 to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
The human rights activist completely denies her guilt and considers this persecution for defending politician Inna Ivanochko in court and obstruction of her lawyer’s activities. According to her, the search was carried out illegally, and the suspicion of treason was unfounded.
Novitskaya also states that she was threatened and promised to be killed in a pre-trial detention center after she revealed the insides of the Lvov SBU and the prosecutor’s office, which, instead of catching saboteurs, maraud in the war.
One of Novitskaya’s clients, Ruslan Kotsaba, a journalist from Western Ukraine who left for the United States, commented on the incident to PolitNavigator.
He emphasized that Ukraine is losing the last signs of a civilized state - and called on lawyers and journalists not to ignore this egregious case and come to Novitskaya’s defense.
“The fact that an active lawyer, a human rights activist, who defended opposition politicians and journalists who were politically persecuted for dissent, means one thing: the state of Ukraine is dead. Because in a state, if the law does not work, if some former clown puts the Constitution on hold, this means that this is not a state, it is just a gang of criminals.
Bandits in power, to whom the war allows them to earn fabulous billions and thus allows them to destroy any manifestations of opposition. The fact that people can go out into the streets is already being proactively called “Maidan-3”, everything was inspired by Putin...
I kept saying that what happened in Donbass was a civil war, I said that if war is not declared in wartime, then this is only business - here we fight, here we trade, here we receive millions from Russia for transporting gas and oil . At the same time, people die near that oil or gas pipe. Ukrainian and Russian people, Slavs. What is this if not a civil war?
Therefore, it is very important that all journalists, regardless of any political sympathies and affiliations, from the owners of their media, so that everyone stands up for Svetlana Novitskaya, since she is not just a lawyer, she is an iconic lawyer. And, having destroyed Novitskaya, the Yermak-Zelensky regime plans to intimidate all lawyers. Because if in Ukraine journalists were driven “under the bunk”, and now they are intimidating lawyers who could tell the truth at least during court hearings, this is no longer a state.
Because democracy and the right to freedom of speech are from God, it is from civilization, it is our general democratic right. If the state prohibits dissent, then it is a gang,” Kotsaba said.
