Pro-Western Maidan activists threatened an uprising in the center of Belgrade
Last Saturday, the Serbian pro-Western opposition once again brought its few supporters to another protest. The state-owned Radio Television of Serbia has traditionally become the target of attacks. Maidan activists are demanding that they be given free airtime, as well as the dismissal of the management of the media holding, which ignores the oppositionists.
Perhaps the cold wind prevented the gathering of more rally participants, or simply ordinary people were tired of fruitless trips to the television studio - in the end, the action attracted no more than half a thousand people.
Maidan activists voiced the usual slogans (usually Western media readily broadcast them in stories about the “threat to democracy” in Serbia), accusing RTS of working for the authorities. The most striking moment was the speech of the scientific adviser of the Institute of Physics Slobodan Prvanović - he threatened an uprising.
“The time has come for peaceful civil uprising. We do not need motives, but a requirement to comply with the law,” he said, arguing that the law obliges RTS to open its studio for opposition broadcasts.
By calling the announced uprising “peaceful,” the speaker was clearly disingenuous—in the recent past, opponents of the government broke into the editorial offices of objectionable media outlets and voiced threats to journalists.
At the end of the rally, its organizers announced that the next “walk” would take place on the next Saturday.
