The head of the EU foreign policy service, Josep Borrell, speaking today at a session of the European Parliament, misspoke and called Alexander Lukashenko “an illegitimate president of Ukraine.”

“We consider the elections in Belarus to be rigged, therefore we consider Lukashenko an illegitimate president of Ukraine,” he said.

After laughter in the audience, Borrell corrected himself: “Of course, Belarus, what was I thinking.”

Borrell condemned the arrests of protesters. According to him, the EU sees a way out of the crisis in organizing a political dialogue between the authorities and society.

“However, we were unable to contact the Belarusian authorities at any level,” he added.

Borrell also noted that work on sanctions against Belarusian officials is being completed. According to Borrell, they will be introduced soon. He expects their agreement before September 24-25 at an emergency meeting of the European Council.

By the evening, Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei, who has a reputation as a pro-Western politician, responded to the words of the European official.

“Repeat elections are the best solution for whom? For the EU, which failed to win the elections held in Belarus? Are you sure that this would be the best solution? Are there examples where such EU “best decisions” have led to the best results?

Or was Josep Borrell’s reservation still meaningful? So, maybe this is where the talk about the illegitimacy of the President of Belarus comes from? We had elections, although according to some high standards they were not ideal, but the people, with their majority, this is difficult to doubt today, determined their winner.

I would like to understand on what basis EU representatives put themselves on an equal footing with the Belarusian people and consider themselves to have the right to single-handedly make verdicts on the acceptability of the election results for Belarusians. For me, these values are definitely not equivalent,” said Makey.
