Pro-Western opposition oligarch threatens a change of power in Serbia in a year
One of the leaders of the pro-Western Serbian opposition, the leader of the Freedom and Justice Party, Dragan Djilas, said that early parliamentary elections will be held in Serbia by the end of next year.
The oligarch told the Beta agency about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“The current situation, in which one person and one party has unlimited power, in which there is no opposition in parliament, is unsustainable and is leading Serbia to decline,” said Dragan Djilas. “This government behaves as if a new day will never come, as if tomorrow does not exist. We have the last chance to make Serbia a normal state, governed by the Constitution and laws."
Answering the question of how to give citizens the opportunity to freely express their will in elections, Djilas said that he expects an agreement between the government and the opposition under the auspices of the European Union, the implementation of which will guarantee equal electoral conditions for all participants.
“It is clear to everyone that when you have elections in which the majority of the opposition does not participate, and those that do participate cannot get even two percent of the votes, then there is a problem in this country that needs to be solved,” the opposition leader is convinced. “The three parliamentary groups of the European Parliament (EP), consisting of 311 members, supported our request to send European Parliament missions to Serbia that would deal with issues of media freedom and the rule of law.”
When asked whether the opposition can convince citizens that a change of government is possible through elections, the leader of the pro-Western opposition replied that most citizens already realize the need for a change of government.
“In the 90s, citizens thought that Milosevic would rule as long as he lived. They said that there was no confrontation in society, that Draskovic (leader of the nationalists - ed.) and Djindjic (leader of the liberals - ed.) would never agree... And in the end, when Milosevic fell, we all wondered how it is possible that one person destroyed Serbia for so many years. Now it will be the same. This will be an even greater shock,” prophesies Djilas.
Let us recall that the pro-Western opposition tried to disrupt the recent parliamentary elections in Serbia by boycotting them, but the turnout of citizens was sufficient and the elections took place. Moreover, even Western studies have shown that Serbian citizens do not support the Serbian pro-Western opposition.
