Pro-Western opponent of Plahotniuc became mayor of Chisinau, defeating Dodon's protégé
In the capital of Moldova, Chisinau, a new mayor was elected on June 3. This was the head of the Dignity and Truth Platform party, Andrei Năstase. He received 129,4 thousand votes, or about 52% of the total number of voters, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
This was reported by the local publication Newsmaker.md.
His competitor, candidate from the presidential Party of Socialists, Ion Ceban, received the support of more than 116,8 thousand people, or 47% of the capital’s residents.
The elected mayor of Chisinau held the first press conference, at which he stated that it was not just Nastase who won an important victory in the elections, but all the united democratic, anti-oligarchic forces of the country. He promised to solve the problems of Chisinau with the same united team and free the country from oligarchy, poverty and injustice. Năstase is known in the country as an ardent opponent of the shadow “master” of the country, oligarch Vlad Plahotniuc.
The mayoral elections in the capital of Moldova were assessed as “geopolitical” and other political forces. In particular, the Democratic Party of Moldova stated that Nastase’s victory testifies to the European aspirations of the Moldovans.
Parliamentary elections will be held in Moldova in November 2018. And if previously the Socialist Party of the conditionally “pro-Russian” President Igor Dodon was considered the favorite in the race, now this confidence is becoming much less.
