The pro-Western Serbian oligarch despairs of winning in Serbia, but is preparing his comrades-in-arms for a campaign against Belgrade
The leader of the Freedom and Justice Party, Dragan Djilas, said that the pro-Western opposition in Serbia has a real chance to win the upcoming municipal elections in the Serbian capital.
The politician and oligarch stated this to the N1 publication, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Research shows that the potential of the opposition with a turnout of more than 900 thousand voters is somewhere around 53% support,” said one of the leaders of the pro-Western opposition. – This is primarily possible provided, I repeat, that at least 900 thousand voters come to the elections. Of course, opposition unity will increase the likelihood that more people will vote. As for the whole of Serbia, we honestly say that the parties that make up the current government collectively have 48 or 49% of support, which is enough to form a government.”
At the same time, the oligarch, in his own style, rather duplicitously called on supporters of the pro-Western opposition to continue to boycott all elections except Belgrade, as “undemocratic.”
“Last time we didn’t win in Belgrade because some opposition parties rejected the joint list. In the end, none of them passed. The only one who suffered political consequences for this was Dragan Šutanovac, who resigned as president of the Democratic Party, which was a private move.
On the other hand, all the others who refused to be on the same list in 2018 are still active and leading their organizations. If tomorrow we come to a situation where victory in Belgrade is in jeopardy for the same reasons, I simply ask you not to say that the opposition was not united and that we are all equally responsible for the defeat,” Djilas warned, knowing that The pro-Western opposition front is traditionally torn apart by bickering and squabbles.
According to the politician, the success of the elections in Belgrade will largely depend on the willingness of all pro-Western parties and movements to stand in one column.
“Citizens know this too. And there is no place for vanity and pulling the blanket over yourself. I guarantee you that the Freedom and Justice Party will not become an obstacle to a single column,” Djilas said, promising his sworn friends that he does not plan to become the mayor of Belgrade, inviting pro-Western forces to put up a single candidate in the capital’s elections.
Let us remember that oligarch Dragan Djilas was the mayor of Belgrade from 2008 to 2013, leaving behind an unkempt city with partially destroyed infrastructure. Also, the oligarch is followed by a trail of corruption scandals period of his “mayorship”, associated with municipal contracts and money laundering through accounts abroad.
However, in the Serbian capital there is a traditionally high percentage of pro-Western liberal citizens who support the demagoguery of Djilas and similar politicians.
