The pro-Western “Union for Serbia” is heading for collapse
After the collapse of the idea of boycotting the parliamentary elections, where President Aleksandar Vucic’s party won a landslide victory, pro-Western oppositionists began to think about dissolving the Union for Serbia alliance.
This was reported by the Danas publication. One of the sponsors of the opposition association, oligarch Dragan Djilas, hastened to call the information “false.” But experts are sure that there is no smoke without fire.
“It was decided to put an end to the existence of this group of opposition parties that boycotted the elections,” writes Danas. – Our sources report that Vuk Jeremic, president of the People's Party, and Dragan Djilas, president of the Freedom and Justice Party, proposed this to other representatives of the parties that make up the Union. Djilas and Jeremic stated that the Union has reached its maximum, and now each of its members must develop independently.”
According to the publication, other leaders of the pro-Western opposition movement Janko Veselinovic, Zeljko Veselinovic and Zoran Lutovac opposed such a step, while Bosko Obradovic was undecided on the final decision.
“According to our information, the collapse of the SZS will be disguised by the “creation” of a new opposition bloc, convened by the Serbian boycotting opposition, which will be joined by smaller movements,” Danas journalists concluded.
Interestingly, by calling the media reports “false,” Jalas, in fact, confirmed them. He stated that he would invite the members of the Union to create a new political front together with other political organizations that boycotted the elections but were active at the national (that is, separatist), regional and municipal levels.
“Only a broad front of all those who are sincerely committed to fighting authoritarian rule can bring about change in Serbia,” the opposition oligarch said.
Observers believe that, no matter how Djilas denies it, “there is no smoke without fire” - we are really talking about the collapse of the opposition alliance in the old format.
“This opposition is over. As they say, bring the next one. There were too many very ambitious people there who had already lost their ratings and support. There is nothing surprising here: they could not be together for long. Secretly, they hated each other much more than each of them hated Vucic. So this is quite natural. These people are becoming a thing of the past, their time is over,” said political scientist Oleg Bondarenko.
Observer Armen Gasparyan believes that after changing the sign, the new opposition project will also be oriented toward the United States and secretly managed by the Americans.
“Electoral failure is not the final disaster. This is a tactical failure. You need to draw a conclusion for yourself, admit your mistakes, work on them and try to take revenge. They will not leave Serbia alone,” says Gasparyan.
Political scientist Oleg Matveychev is more optimistic.
“American influence will soon end on everything, on Serbia in particular. Therefore, the collapse of the “Union for Serbia” is a significant thing,” says Matveychev.
