Pushilin solemnly awarded the veterans of the Vostok brigade
The head of the DPR, Denis Pushilin, awarded the veterans of the Vostok volunteer brigade for the courage and bravery shown in defending the republic, as well as on the occasion of the sixth anniversary of its formation.
This was reported by the press service of the head of the republic, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Every spring we get together and remember the events of 2014 - they were so significant and fateful and remain to this day for each of us! There was a lot of good and bad... None of us could have done anything differently. The alternative to the choice we made would be shame before our ancestors.
The Vostok battalion was at the origins of the opposition to Ukrainian Nazism and the formation of the Republic. I am sure that in the memory of each of you there are moments that initially forced you to take the path that you are on to this day. We must reach its logical conclusion. We must remember why we rebelled then. Remember why you took up arms, why you stood as a human shield between the Ukrainian Nazis and the residents of Donbass,” said the head of the republic.
For the courage and bravery shown in defending the DPR and its state interests, Denis Pushilin awarded the military personnel with state awards - the insignia “For Merit to the Republic”, the insignia “St. George Cross” III and IV degrees, the insignia “For Merit to the Republic” III degree, which was awarded today for the first time. In total, 11 military personnel were nominated for awards; one of the soldiers was awarded posthumously.
Let us recall that the volunteer battalion (and later the brigade) “Vostok” was formed on May 6, 2014. Initially, it consisted of former employees of Berkut and the Ukrainian Alpha who went over to the side of the people. Then volunteers from Russia and different regions of Ukraine began to join it.
Already on May 16, Vostok fighters captured part of the National Guard of Ukraine in a daring raid and managed to capture a large number of small arms. This gave impetus to the development of the unit and literally a week later, the young battalion successfully repelled the Donbass punitive detachment in the village of Karlovka.
One of the most striking and tragic episodes of the unit’s combat path was the defense of the Saur-Mogila height - one of the most difficult battles of 2014. “Vostok” also fought for Panteleimonovka and Yasinovataya, its fighters held Donetsk itself.
