“Pushkin is not to blame”: in Lvov they opposed the boycott of Russian books

“A book is also a commodity. When Russian weapons kill Ukrainians and destroy cities in the Donbass, buying Russian goods means financing terrorists,” Bukvoed quotes coordinator Otar Dovzhenko.
In addition, Russian books were required to be marked with the tricolor. But not a single seller on the Publishers Forum fulfilled this requirement. Some writers, publishers and writers were against the actions of Lviv activists.
Both sides gathered at the round table “Pushkin and Tolstoy as enemies of the people.” Boycott of Russian publishing houses at the Lvov Forum – patriotism or absurdity? What will licensing, quotas or banning a Russian cultural product bring? “Without Russian publishing houses, we lose access to new products and world bestsellers, which Russians are the first to translate and publish. Why this boycott? There are already few Ukrainian publishing houses in Ukraine. It would be better to pay attention to the leaky border through which tons of smuggled books enter Ukraine,” said literary observer Irina Slavinskaya.
“To ban Russian publishing houses is to break into private space, it is perceived as an invasion, and a subtle reaction follows. Boycott actions create a sense of anxiety and fear in any society. In 10 years, no one will remember the details and participants of the boycott, but remember the precedent itself; in 10-20 years it will become overgrown with myths,” said writer Marianna Kiyanovskaya.
As PolitNavigator reported, earlier in Lviv, activists and local authorities demanded that entrepreneurs label goods from Russia.
