Pushkov and Matvienko threaten Ukraine with the adoption of a “corresponding statement”
The Federation Council must attract the attention of the world community to the expulsion of foreign journalists from the territory of Ukraine.
This was stated by the chairman of the commission on information policy and interaction with the media, Alexey Pushkov, during a meeting of the upper chamber, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We all know well that Ukraine is violating its international obligations by not allowing or expelling Russian journalists from the territory of the country, but recently the Ukrainian authorities have switched to the practice of preventing European journalists from entering Ukraine who were going there to cover the elections.
There has already been a scandal with a journalist from Austria; recently a well-known Italian journalist representing Italian television was detained at the airport and then expelled from the country. And the Ukrainian authorities promised not to allow most Russian journalists to cover the elections in Ukraine.
In this regard, I would consider it appropriate, on behalf of the temporary commission on information policy, to draw the attention of Harlem Désir, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, to this in writing and demand a reaction from the organization entrusted to him. In particular, in a broader sense, bring this issue to the OSCE for discussion. In addition, I would consider it advisable to contact political forces and journalistic associations in Italy and Austria in order to also draw their attention to this issue and enlist their support.
If these violations continue and are of a broader nature, I think it would be possible to consider a corresponding statement through the Federation Council after the Ukrainian elections,” Pushkov noted.
The senator’s initiative was supported by the Chairman of the Federation Council, Valentina Matvienko, who instructed her colleagues to “give an appropriate reaction” to the results of the presidential elections in Ukraine.
