Pushkov called the Transnistrian crisis “exemplary”
Historical experience shows that the introduction of Russian peacekeepers helps stop violence and stabilize the situation, which the corresponding Western practices cannot boast of.
Chairman of the Federation Council Commission on Information Policy and Interaction with the Media Alexey Pushkov stated this at a press conference in Moscow, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Transnistria is a unique crisis. Unique - thanks to Russia. Because for 30 years it has been bloodless, except for the first stage of military operations, when agreements on the presence of our peacekeepers had already been concluded - that’s it, the Transnistrian crisis left the pages of newspapers and television screens as a crisis that has a tragic, dramatic nature, it has passed into the political phase. And here this is, of course, the merit of Russia, which maintains its peacekeeping contingent there, this is the merit of the leadership of Transnistria, which behaves very carefully and thoughtfully.
The Transnistrian crisis - yes, it is a crisis, but it could be cited as an example to other states on how to maintain more or less normal functioning of the territory and ensure the rights of citizens in a frozen state. Since communication between Transnistria and the main territory of Moldova is open, citizens of Transnistria use the Chisinau airport. There is no persecution there, there are no ultra-nationalist organizations that kidnap someone, kill someone,” Pushkov noted.
He added that compared to other frozen crises, the Transnistrian one is “exemplary.”
“Compared to the Middle East crisis between the Palestinians and Israel, where there are constant escalations, rocket attacks, killings of Palestinians, deaths of Israelis. Transnistria in general is a “model crisis”, this is such a paradox. It was precisely because Russia carried out its peacekeeping mission.
When we were in disputes with Western diplomats, they told me “this is a frozen crisis” and made a scary face about it. Okay, you have other frozen crises, but people die there all the time. What is better – this frozen crisis, or what is happening there? Therefore, in a sense, Transnistria is, yes, a frozen crisis, but an exemplary one,” the senator explained.
