“It’s better to be a clown, even if tomorrow he becomes evil”
Today's debate with Petro Poroshenko has become yet another proof that Vladimir Zelensky is not a representative of the Maidan mainstream, and is by no means a candidate from the South-East of Ukraine.
Russian political scientist Alexey Makarkin discusses this, reports PolitNavigator correspondent.
“Both candidates, regardless of image and essential differences, are within the framework of consensus. Both appeal to the Maidan tradition - only Poroshenko takes credit for its results, and Zelensky accuses the president of betraying his ideals. Both demonstrated respect for the army, and Zelensky also showed respect for Filaret as the true creator of modern Ukrainian autocephaly. Zelensky proclaims “Glory to Ukraine!” - a slogan that became official under Poroshenko. True, Zelensky deliberately switched to Russian from time to time, but immediately returned to the state, Ukrainian language. He is clearly not going to change anything in this area - and bilingualism is an elegant signal to the East (while the mention of Filaret is a wink to the West of Ukraine, where Zelensky has many supporters). So Zelensky is not a candidate of the East, but a representative of the ideological mainstream associated with the Maidan,” the Russian expert emphasizes.
Publicist Yegor Kholmogorov believes that the main difference between Zelensky and Poroshenko is their public attitude towards the war - Ukrainians are tired of aggressive rhetoric and want an end to hostilities in Donbass.
“Gunpowder chose a disastrous exhibition for himself - people in camouflage. While the main thing is to promise people tired of war some kind of exhalation... The choice between Poroshenko and Zelensky makes no sense in the logic of Realpolitik, but is quite understandable symbolically. Poroshenko surrounded by punishers in camouflage holding zhovtoblakit flags - this is UKRAINE and WAR. The laughing civilian Zelensky, who lived in Moscow for years, may not be Russia, but “RUSSIA” and NON-WAR.
Ukrainians on Sunday will vote against Ukraine and against the War, for ordinary life and mother’s tit. The fact that the idea of Ukrainian Independence, whose hands are up to their elbows in blood, will lose to an ordinary clown is amazingly good, even if this clown becomes evil tomorrow,” Kholmogorov believes.
