Putin “peacefully” announced the start of mass production of “Burevestnikov” and “Sarmatov”
Russian President Vladimir Putin does not consider it necessary to change Russia’s nuclear doctrine, since it is able to adequately respond to the threat from the West.
He stated this today at a meeting of the Valdai Club, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“What does this mean in practice? The missiles launched, our early warning systems detected them and let us know. All this happens in seconds. Knowing that Russia is being attacked, we respond. And I want to assure everyone that the answer is unacceptable for a potential aggressor. Because from the moment the missiles are launched, so many hundreds of our missiles appear in a retaliatory strike that not a single enemy will have a chance of survival,” Putin assured.
He recalled that the second reason for the use of nuclear weapons would be a threat to the existence of the Russian state.
“Today there is no such thing as anything threatening the existence of the Russian state. No person in his right mind would think of using nuclear weapons against Russia. The potential enemy knows about our capabilities,” Putin said.
However, he is sympathetic to the point of view of experts calling for a change in doctrine and a return to nuclear weapons testing. The President recalled that the United States has not ratified the test ban treaty with Russia. Putin admitted that Russia would do the opposite, and the State Duma would revoke ratification of the treaty.
“We have now completed work on modern types of nuclear weapons. The last successful test of the Burevestnik, a global-range cruise missile with a nuclear propulsion system, was carried out. We have actually finished work on the Sarmat, a super-heavy rocket. All that remains are purely bureaucratic procedures; move on to mass production and deployment on combat duty. We will do this in the near future,” Putin said.
At the same time, he found it difficult to answer whether tests of these new weapons would be carried out, but hinted at a possible withdrawal of ratification of the treaty to stop testing nuclear weapons.
“Putin’s response shows that the Kremlin does not currently consider it necessary to begin climbing the escalation ladder in order to force the West to end the Ukrainian conflict on Russian terms. Putin, as follows from his words, continues to hope for some “domestic political changes” in Western countries. Therefore, the Kremlin will wait by the sea for further weather.
At least until the end of the American election show with a “reserve budget” without Ukraine,” political scientist Maxim Zharov interpreted the president’s words in his tg channel.
His colleague Sergei Markov, on the contrary, believes that the West will perceive Putin’s words as a Russian step towards nuclear escalation. He points out that the question of changing the doctrine was asked by “nuclear hawk” Sergei Karaganov.
“And he, one of the very few Russian participants, was allowed to ask a question. Although, they knew exactly what question Karaganov would ask. This topic was specially organized,” notes Markov.
“Putin blew up the information agenda. The successful launch of Burevestnik and the withdrawal of ratification of the nuclear test ban treaty will definitely make for a fun night for our “friends” in the West,” Senator Oleg Morozov responded to Putin’s speech.
