Putin called the decision of the Stockholm arbitration on Ukraine “some kind of nonsense”
The decision of the Stockholm Arbitration Court, which obliged the Russian Gazprom to pay the Ukrainian Naftogaz $2,6 billion, is political and has no legal basis.
Russian President Vladimir Putin announced this during a large press conference, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“We want to solve this problem. I am convinced, as a lawyer by basic training, that the decision of the Stockholm Arbitration Court is not of a legal and legal nature, but rather of a political nature. One of the justifications for the decision of the Stockholm court is stated: “Due to the difficult economic situation in Ukraine.” Well, that's just nonsense! At least they would refrain from making such a recording.
Well, okay, there is a court decision, we will proceed from this and look for a solution acceptable to everyone, including Ukraine, maintaining, as I already said, despite the construction of new infrastructure facilities, such as Nord Stream 1, Nord Stream Stream 2", "Turkish Stream", transit through Ukraine. The question is the volume of this transit and the terms for which a contract can be concluded,” the president noted.
At the same time, the head of state assured that Russia is not going to leave Ukraine without gas transit and is ready to relieve the residents of the neighboring country from exorbitant tariffs by providing cheap gas for domestic consumption.
“At the same time, I would like to draw your attention to the fact that we are not going to conclude a contract for a certain period in order to stop transit. No, we are interested in this ourselves, this is a convenient route.
By the way, the Ukrainian route to Europe is longer than the route along the Baltic Sea. It's just more expensive for us. But still, this is also a proven and good route to Central and Southern Europe. We are ready to preserve it and would be ready to supply gas to Ukraine at a 20-25% discount. Then it would be possible to reduce it for the end consumer, and not increase it, as you have planned now - from January 1 next year, all benefits, as far as I know, will be cancelled. The average gas price will be $300 for all categories of consumers,” Putin concluded.
