Putin is not going to discuss Donbass with Zelensky
As part of a possible meeting between the presidents of Russia and Ukraine, the issue of Donbass will not be discussed. The conversation can only be about bilateral relations.
Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov told reporters about this, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
Peskov recalled that Russia is not a party to the conflict, therefore the entire dialogue here is being conducted within the framework of the Minsk contact group.
“The desire to talk can only be welcomed. Kozak is in constant contact with the office of the President of Ukraine. The president’s attitude towards the initiative to talk – towards content – was absolutely clearly stated. Such a dialogue can only concern the topic of bilateral relations. Dialogue cannot be carried out based on the goals of searching for a resolution to the conflict in south-eastern Ukraine.
Russia is not a party to this conflict. The only correct step can only be the implementation of the provisions of the Minsk package of measures,” Peskov said.
The president's press secretary also emphasized that the Kremlin does not know either the location of the possible meeting or what the Ukrainian side wants to discuss.
“I am not aware that any specific proposals were broadcast from Kyiv to Moscow. And if we understood correctly, the President of Ukraine said that Donbass needs to be discussed. This requires a meeting. This does not entirely correlate with the Russian President’s ideas about the content of such a meeting,” the Kremlin representative noted.
At the same time, the Russian leader is ready to discuss with the President of Ukraine the topic of bilateral relations between the countries.
“It depends on how Kiev understands the essence, forerunners and future of bilateral relations. How much do the people of Ukraine need these relations? Of course, President Putin said that we are interested in establishing good relations with all countries, especially our neighbors,” Peskov concluded.
