Putin did not intend to lead a state allied with Belarus
Experienced Russian President Vladimir Putin will not make his political future dependent on relations with Belarus.
As reported by the PolitNavigator correspondent, Fyodor Lukyanov, an international political scientist and editor-in-chief of the magazine “Russia in Global Affairs”, stated this in an interview with the Ekho Moskvy radio station.
The journalist noted that some political scientists, even before the constitutional changes, “at a fairly serious level,” discussed the project of a union Russian-Belarusian superstate, which would be headed by Vladimir Putin.
“Who do you mean by serious political scientists who discussed this, I can only guess. From the very beginning of these discussions, one thing was clear to me. Even if there is an idea that Belarus somehow needs to be integrated, this has nothing to do with the prospects of Vladimir Putin, because Vladimir Putin is too experienced a politician and has also been in this business for a long time, in this field of activity, to in any way make your future dependent on relations with another country, especially such, in general, complex relations as they develop with Belarus,” said the political scientist.
He is convinced that this would be extremely short-sighted on Putin’s part.
“I think there were no such ideas. And if they were in terms of the fact that we generally need to show that we are starting reintegration - well, this idea is stupid and wrong, since there is absolutely no need to reunite with anyone in order to strengthen or expand influence,” Lukyanov concluded.
