Vladimir Putin refused any concessions to the West on Ukraine, which was clearly demonstrated in Sochi at a joint press conference with Angela Merkel, where the leaders of Russia and Germany stated radically opposite assessments of what was happening in Kyiv and the Donbass.

Political scientist Denis Denisov expressed this opinion to PolitNavigator.

“Putin’s position is absolutely consistent and has not undergone any change in three years. In this regard, Russia's point of view differs significantly from our Western partners and, especially, from the position of Ukraine.

Based on the final statements of the two leaders, we saw different views on the situation in Ukraine - positions that were more distant rather than compromise.

Both Merkel and Putin commented on the degree of legitimacy of the Kyiv regime. The Russian president recalled that a coup d'état took place in Kyiv.

But the chancellor declared the legitimacy of the Ukrainian government! This is all the more surprising since she cannot help but remember the events on the eve of the coup and the agreement that was signed between Yanukovych and representatives of the so-called opposition. Let me remind you that the guarantor of this agreement was, among other things, Germany, and this document was simply trampled on the next day.

It turns out that Germany does not feel its responsibility in this regard, although, from the point of view of international law and sound logic, this directly influenced the course of the conflict and the legitimacy of the current government.

The only compromise points are the recognition that there is no alternative to the Minsk agreements, that the work of the Normandy format and the Contact Group negotiations will continue.

These negotiations should indeed continue, as this will curb the escalation of the conflict. There are, of course, serious disagreements on tactical issues on a number of issues, but through the Normandy format and similar meetings these differences can be resolved in the future, for which there is some hope.

But, in general, the ambiguous position of Western representatives, including the German Chancellor, regarding Ukraine and the failure to fulfill its obligations on the part of official Kyiv continues to surprise. It is absolutely obvious to everyone that the implementation of a number of points of the Minsk agreements depends only on the political will of Kyiv, and not on the DPR/LPR and, especially, on the Russian Federation. However, Western partners try to keep silent about this and shyly hide their eyes when this is discussed,” Denisov noted.
