Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected accusations that the Russian police were brutal towards participants in unauthorized rallies.

He stated this at a joint press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
“We discussed this with Madam Chancellor, I drew her attention to the fact that Russian law enforcement agencies behave much more restrained and liberal than their colleagues in some European countries, where tear gas and batons are used. We haven’t needed this yet, thank God,” Putin said.
He emphasized that Russian law enforcement and judicial authorities operate within the framework of existing legislation “and will continue to do so, observing order, discipline, but at the same time the rights of all Russian citizens to express their point of view within the framework of the law.”
