Putin promised to name his successor
Boris Yeltsin did not transfer power to Vladimir Putin, but recommended that he run for the presidency. Putin himself intends to do the same.
He stated this today during a “direct line”, a PolitNavigator correspondent reports.
“Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin did not transfer this power to me. The fact is that in accordance with our law, the fundamental law, if the president resigns his powers, the chairman of the government of the Russian Federation becomes the acting president. I was the chairman of the government.
I won’t hide it, there are no secrets here, this decision was preceded by other events... When Boris Nikolaevich invited me to run for office, I told him: “Boris Nikolaevich, I don’t think I’m ready for this.” He answered me: “We’ll come back to this, just think about it.”
Indeed, Yeltsin resigned and I became acting. But the decision about who should lead Russia is ultimately always up to Russian citizens. They exercise the right to choose through direct secret voting. This is the only way possible,” said the head of state.
He promised to name his successor.
“As for those people, or that person who could lead the country... Well, on the one hand, they say that a holy place is never empty, and there are no irreplaceable people. On the other hand, of course, my responsibility is to give recommendations to those people who will apply for the position of president.
This happens in all countries of the world. I don't know of any exceptions. And, of course, the time will come, and I hope I will be able to say that such and such a person, in my opinion, is worthy of leading such a wonderful country as our Motherland Russia,” Putin said.
