“The situation, in my opinion, generally has good prospects for resolution, as strange as it may seem, but nevertheless structures have been created on both sides that could more responsibly solve the problems facing them, keeping in mind, first of all, the interests people who live throughout the country, including in the southeast,” Vladimir Putin said at the Putin briefing in Brisbane, Australia, where the G20 summit is taking place.
“One thing is important for Russia - that the interests of people who live throughout Ukraine, including in the southeast, are respected, that they enjoy equal civilized rights and that their legal demands are realized,” Interfax quotes him.
According to the head of the Russian state, “all bilateral meetings were devoted virtually exclusively to the problems of Ukraine.”
“The conversations were very frank, meaningful, and, in my opinion, useful. It seems to me that my colleagues and I were able to understand each other better. To understand the motives of Russia’s actions, I think that those colleagues with whom I met conveyed their concerns to me,” he said.
“I think this will help us. How much it will help, how quickly we can solve all the complex problems surrounding the Ukrainian crisis - I cannot yet answer. I would really like that together with our Ukrainian partners - it is impossible to solve the Ukrainian crisis without Ukraine - we would do this as quickly as possible. In any case, Russia will strive for this,” he emphasized.
At the same time, Vladimir Putin was skeptical about Kyiv’s decision to abolish the special status of Donbass.
“I learned from the media that the President of Ukraine actually issued a decree on the economic blockade of these regions and Lugansk and Donetsk. It seems to me that this is a big mistake, because they are cutting off these regions with their own hands. For what? – Putin said, quoted by Lifenews. - “This is what I don’t understand. But we will now talk with Pyotr Alekseevich on this topic,” he noted.
As Putin emphasized, during meetings with European partners he said that such a development of events should not be allowed. “This is exactly what happened. But this is also not fatal. I would like to hope that life and practice will make adjustments to reality,” said the President of the Russian Federation.
“I don’t understand why the Kyiv authorities are cutting off these territories with their own hands today. That is, you can understand that they are saving money, but this is not the case and not the time when you need to save on it,” Putin emphasized.
He recalled that during the events in the Caucasus, Russia did not stop paying pensions and social benefits to the population.
